Embracing the Unexpected: A Year of Adventures and Lessons in Midwifery

As the curtain closed on 2025, it was incredible to reflect on a year full of unexpected challenges and growth. My journey as a travel midwife has been a whirlwind of ups, downs, and mind-boggling experiences that have forever shaped my perspective on work, life, and resilience.

Reflecting on 2025: A Year of Learning

2025 was a wild ride, marked by unconventional work settings and bizarre patient assignments. The chaos of my nursing contracts was underscored by the curious mix of palliative care and postnatal cases under one roof. It was a vivid reminder that, sometimes, the unexpected turn of events serves as the deepest well of learning.

Navigating the Complexities of Agency Work

Working as an agency nurse comes with its fair share of quirks and perks. While the flexibility and promise of high pay are alluring, the reality of being an “on-call fixer” often collides with the desire for steady hours and weekends filled with family connections. The struggle for optimal shift allocations often leads to unforgettable anecdotes—like being overlooked for Christmas Day shifts despite being surrounded by a skeleton staff in desperate need of relief.

Finding Comfort in the Unusual

Amidst unreliable accommodation with broken lights, showers and appliances, there came the pleasant discovery of a trusty air fryer. In these quirky moments, I’ve found small pockets of joy. Being greeted by random tradies showing up to fix household issues became a running theme during contracts, highlighting the unpredictability of my life on-the-go.

The Call of Adventure

Preparing for another adventure in 2026, with one-way tickets to the Carribean, the UK and other exciting destinations, it’s the thrill of exploration that keeps me going. I plan to sprinkle in a side series about my travels, sharing stories from around the globe to act as a guide and, perhaps, even an inspiration for midwives like me who are driven by diverse ambitions—be it globetrotting, housing investments or simply choosing to embrace the spontaneity of agency life.

Looking Ahead: A Year Full of Promise

With no permanent position on the horizon, I’m embracing the opportunity to follow my passion wherever it leads me. Whether it’s working on contracts that align with my goals or living in new places that offer fresh perspectives, the upcoming year is full of promise. I’ll continue sharing these tales, hoping they resonate with others who dream of blending work and passion in unique ways.

Here’s to 2026—a year of growth, travel, and, most importantly, stories that enrich our lives in ways only unexpected journeys can. Stay tuned for more adventures from the life of a travel midwife!
