Life Admin: the top 9 things you’ll need for life on the road

Trying to organise life on the road…..some things I organised beforehand but others I didn’t think about until I was on the road and realised I needed to! So, here’s a list of the top 9 things that have made life on the road a little bit easier.

UNION

Check with your union if they can offer a temporary membership when moving interstate. Depending on the length of contract, you may need to transfer your membership to that state.

INSURANCE: CAR

Are you covered nationwide? And what are you covered for?  Check with your current insurance.

INSURANCE: CONTENTS

I upgraded my contents insurance to the top level offered by the company I’m with – that way all my belongings are covered no matter where I am. The possessions that I have in my storage facility are also covered. I don’t have a home base, so every time I move I also change my address with my insurance.

MAIL

I changed all my correspondence to online but there are some things that still have to be physically mailed. So, I enlisted the use of a family members’ PO Box. Not everyone has this option and sometimes you want things delivered to where you are. Australia Post lets you set up a parcel collect address via their app or you can get post sent c/o the local post office – both free of charge. (In other countries, check to see if the local post office offers a similar sort of service).

ONLINE ACCESS

Some places provide free Wi-Fi – but not all places do. And sometimes the quality of the Wi-Fi leaves a lot to be desired. Get a good phone plan with a large enough data allowance in case you need to use it as your sole means to get online. My plan has a generous data allowance and any unused data rolls over to the next month. Importantly, my plan does not count uploads towards my allowance and neither does it “round up” a kilobyte to a megabyte when considering my total usage.

CAR SERVICE

I keep up my regular services no matter where I am. I find it easier to go through the dealership, that way all the records are online.

SELF SERVICE

As in making sure I keep up with regular dental and optical checks. I check with my health insurance who the recommended providers are wherever I am and use them.

FITNESS

Walking is free and can be done anywhere.  But I also use apps (I get easily bored, so I have a few I can change between – a yoga and barre app). Fitbit Premium has lots of workout vids.  And if you don’t want to spend the money, then YouTube has plenty of free stuff.  If you prefer face to face workouts, most gyms will offer a free or reduced rate trial pass so you can check out a few places and see which one you pefer.

BANK/CREDIT CARD

If you notice your card is soon to expire, then get in first and contact your bank before they send it to your postal address (which in my case is currently in a different state!!!!)

Do you have any questions about anything else???  Let me know.
