Temporary Contracts In South Australia

The trials of temporary contracts in South Australia

Working in South Australia was a mixed bag, to say the least. The initial experience was challenging, but things did improve eventually. It turned out to be more nursing-focused than I had hoped, but that’s just the nature of temporary contracts — you never really know what you’re getting into until you’re there.

Just when I thought I had found my footing, things took an unexpected turn. The hospital decided they didn’t need me anymore and released me from my contract early. This was done in order to shunt me off to another hospital in a nearby town. The machinations of this all took place without my knowledge – a stark reminder that you’re often just a number in these situations.

Adaptability is key

Upon arriving at the new hospital, things turned out to be quite positive. The team were lovely and there was significantly less nursing work, which was a relief. It was a reminder that flexibility and adaptability are crucial skills in this line of work.

After finishing working in South Australia, I headed to the Gold Coast to attend a wedding, which provided a much-needed break. Normally, I’d have my next contract lined up before finishing the current one, but this time was different.

The waiting game

Finding a new contract on this occasion proved to be more challenging than expected. There are definitely opportunities out there, but they often come with caveats, such as no partner accommodation or lower pay rates than I’m willing to accept. I’m not one to compromise easily when it comes to the essentials. I discuss this issue in greater depth here.
Communication with agencies has been another hurdle as I prefer to handle things via email but sometimes it requires picking up the phone to get things moving.

Staying busy and grounded

While waiting for the right contract, I’m making the most of my time on the Gold Coast. The lifestyle here is incredible — people are up early in the morning, walking, running and enjoying the great outdoors. It’s a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of my past city-life in Melbourne.

Looking ahead

My journey in the healthcare industry continues, with its ups and downs, surprises, lessons….and new adventures.
